Free Weights: Precision Loading

While the barbell handles absolute max load, dumbbells correct unilateral imbalances. The dilemma in a garage setting is footprint versus feel.

Fixed vs Adjustable

Fixed Urethane or Rubber Hex: Indestructible. They offer a commercial gym feel and can be dropped safely. However, a 5-100lb set requires a massive, heavy-duty tier rack that consumes significant wall space.

Selectorized/Adjustable: Systems that use a dial, pin, or twist handle to change weight from 5lbs up to 80-90lbs in a single block. They save incredible amounts of space and money, but are fragile and cannot be dropped. Their bulky physical size at lower weights can also impede range of motion on exercises like bicep curls.

Calculating Space Requirements

A standard 3-tier dumbbell rack measuring 50 inches wide will protrude about 24 inches from the wall. You must leave a 3-foot clearance in front of the rack simply to bend over, unrack the weights safely with proper spinal alignment, and step back to your bench.
